Blending & Mixing Terpenes with Curative Distillate

Mixing Terpenes with Curative Distillate

Terpenes are the essential aromatics of curatives, mixing terpenes back into curatives distillate allows you to create a powerful & flavorful product. During the distillation process the terpenes are normally burnt off, leaving behind an extremely potent, yet tasteless product. Adding terpenes back into the curative distillate is an essential part of the process to create a quality end product, unless you’re going for the raw effect. Mixing & blending your terpenes to create specific strain profiles & getting the ratio right can be tricky, here at Summit Research we offer a Terpene Science Class to walk you through the process & give some hands on training.

Blending Terpenes to Create Specific Strain Profiles –

Terpenes are the base components that make up specific curative strains. Have you ever wondered what gave OG that gassy flavor, or how Forbidden Fruit has such a sweet aroma to it? It’s a combination of terpenes that make up the genetic profile of any specific strain. These strains can be replicated using a combination of terpenes & mixing them together. Using isolated analytical (food-grade) terpenes we’re able to formulate combinations to create specific strain profiles.

What’s the difference between analytical food-grade terpenes & curative derived terpenes? Curatives derived terpenes offer extremely low yields & not very precise control over isolating specific terpenes. Food-grade terpenes are a high quality alternative, a pure terpene isolate, not a mixture of chemicals & flavoring.

Actually mixing them together is a tedious process since it must be done in a precise, controlled environment, even the smallest error will throw off the blend. It’s important that you have proper training & that you use the right equipment for this process.

  • Always wear protection – terpenes are still a powerful solvent, always take a precaution by using safety glasses & rubber gloves to avoid any accidents.
  • Operate in a ventilated area – the aroma from the terpenes can be overpowering, operate in a ventilated area so it doesn’t get too overwhelming.
  • Use precise measurements – equipment is a vital part in getting precise measurements, but it also takes a bit of skill, make sure your measurements are exact when replicating strain profiles.

Strain profiles can be replicated using a combination of terpenes, this is a revolutionary process for the curative industry. The strain profiles can be used to mix with curative distillate products, or other extracts to provide additional flavor & effects.

Mixing Strain Profiles with Curative Distillate –

Once you’ve perfected a formula for a terpene profile you’re ready to mix it with a curative distillate. Curative distillates are known to test upwards of 90% on average. However during the short path distillation process most of the terpenes are lost. Mixing terpene profiles back into the distillate is an essential part of creating a flavorful end product. The terpene mix is a varying ratio, using to much of the terpene blend may cause the product to sizzle, have an overpowering flavor & reduce the potency of the end product.

Mixing the distillate with the terpene blend you’ve created can be done simply by mixing the distillate & the terpene blend by hand. More advanced techniques will use hot plate stirring systems to heat it right below the boiling points & than use a magnetic stirring device to evenly distribute the blend throughout the distillate.

The Terpene Science Class –

Learn the fundamentals of everything discussed in this article & than some! Terpenes are an exciting frontier that Summit Research is right at the front of. Summit offers an advantageous terpene science class designed by an industry leader in analytical terpene blends. This class covers the fundamentals of terpenes, how to identify specific profiles, and how to formulate specific blends. Get some hands on experience blending your own strain profile, and take home a sample from the class.
